Three is the new one: Halo 3 tops Japan charts
You thought it would never happen. As we all know, the Xbox 360 and Japan don’t mix. Why? Because it’s the land of Nintendo and Sony, baby. Imagine my surprise when Kotaku said that Halo 3, that behemoth shooter that’s making everyone in North America crazy, tops the Japanese charts this week.
Say what?
Halo 3 is #1 in the Japanese charts this week. It feels odd typing it, so a take-two was necessary. I did some deeper digging and stumbled into what seems to be the source of all this: a Japanese Web site that confirmed what we just learned. See the complete list after the jump:
1) Halo 3 (360) 59,000 copies
2) Pokémon’s Mysterious Dungeon: Toki (DS) 55,000
3) Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core (PSP) 54,000
4) Tamagotchi (DS) 54,000
5) Pokémon’s Mysterious Dungeon: Yami (DS) 46,000
6) Bleach Blade Battlers 2nd (PS2) 31,000
7) English Test 2 (DS) 28,000
8) Yu-gi-oh Duel Monsters GX (PSP) 28,000
9) Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (PS3) 27,000
10) Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops + (PSP) 25,000
Could it be possible that this is just a slow sales week? You see, the titles that Halo 3 ousted aren’t exactly pushovers (i.e. Pokémon, FFVII, and Metal Gear) in Japan. Then again, Gamasutra reasoned that the true #1 in the charts has been Mysterious Dungeon because it led sales for the past three weeks, but was ousted by Halo 3 because Pokémon is always split into two nearly identical games.
Enjoy the view while you can, Master Chief.
