Kwari shows off game levels, dated-looking visuals

by Mike on September 19th, 2007

Looks like Quake to me.

What is it about Kwari that makes me want to write?

Perhaps it’s the brilliant idea of a having to use real money to purchase ammunition. Maybe it’s the concept of earning money for every shot you land, and losing money for every bullet you take. Possibly, it’s the BigWorld technology that’s said to make development shorter.

Whatever it is, I have mixed feelings about the FPS.

This time, Kwari released images/videos for its levels. There’s not much to see in terms of detail, but you’ll get a feel for the terrain. What is impressive is the site’s use of QuickTime, which gives you a 360-degree view of the panorama.

If you haven’t heard of the game, then it’s time you do. Kwari is an FPS where you earn cash by hitting the opposing players or by winning jackpot rewards built on a number of in-game elements.

The visuals remind me of Quake III. This means I was wrong about my prediction about Kwari looking like a 2001 shooter. It should have been 1999.

Still, the concept of getting paid to play this game is intriguing. What’s sacrificing a few hours to play a dated-looking game if you can earn some cash? Let’s just hope Kwari plays better than it looks.

10 opinions for Kwari shows off game levels, dated-looking visuals

I’d presume that the visuals look dated is due to the fact that a great looking game would cause lag on older rigs - which isn’t great when you’re paying for money. This way it’s all based on skill and not how fast your rig runs the game.

I’d presume that the fact the visuals look dated is because a great looking game would cause lag on older rigs*

I really need to watch my grammar :-(

    Hmm.

I did consider the visuals and its effect on lag. Then again, this isn’t an excuse. Here’s a good example why not:

    Guild Wars.

That blasted game is literally pretty as a painting. Is there lag there? Barely. The game is so smooth, it can be a shooter in another life. It’s the technology used by Guild Wars that makes it hum.

If Guild Wars can afford to be purdy, then so should Kwari. I can name several more MMOs that are bigger and prettier than this upcoming shooter, but that’s overkill.

I see your point but you have to remember that speed matters a lot more in an FPS than it does in an RPG. Even the smallest bit of lag can mean a considerable drop in your advantage in an FPS.

Can you name several MMO’s that aren’t RPG’s though? ;-)

To be honest though I think the drop in visuals is more because it’s a gambling company trying to make an FPS. We can’t expect stellar graphics from people who aren’t known for developing games like this.

You mean, aside from Huxley, Hellgate: London, Twilight War, and PlanetSide? ;)

I think you missed my point about Guild Wars. It being an MMORPG has everything to do with this. The game is SO smooth, it can be turned into a shooter if someone took the time, and you would have great frame rates.

Kwari, the publisher, isn’t making the Kwari shooter. It tapped Micro Forté to develop the game. Micro Forté is touted to be an MMO developer, so reasoning that “a company isn’t known for developing games such as this” is simply not an excuse.

Take Huxley as further proof. Webzen isn’t known for “games like this” (seemingly high-quality titles like Huxley) But here they are, working on a smooth, incredible-looking MMOFPS for the PC and Xbox 360.

You see my friend, there is no excuse for an ugly MMOFPS with 1999 graphics in 2007. There’s always a way to make the gameplay smooth, and it’s not about tuning down the visuals.

Now you’ve got me wanting an FPS running on the Guild Wars engine ;-)

I think we now know why you run an FPS blog and I don’t, heh. I’ve just gone back and read an article about Kwari in this month’s EDGE and it mentions the MMO developer thing. I’m just going to blame my memory :p

Thanks for the details and, whatever the case, Kwari does seem like an interesting prospect to pay attention to in the coming year.

You’re welcome to the details, Tom. :) I try to keep this blog up-to-date with FPS news, but I do try to keep it different from other game blogs because hey, you can’t really compete with those guys haha.

Speaking of Guild Wars, I just got my old video card back (it got busted recently, and it still had warranty). When I ran Guild Wars, it gave me a framerate of 61 frames per second.

I kid you not. I don’t get any lag at all even when the place is packing with players, though the framerate “drops” to a still-excellent 40 fps.

I can only imagine how Kwari would look like if the company were to use GW’s engine. By the way, GW came out last April 2005. If Kwari gives me hiccups, I’d click uninstall.

[…] when I viewed a trailer showing off Kwari’s levels, I realized that I may be wrong about the game looking circa 1999. I may not have seen any character 3D models yet, but bear with me and watch the clip […]
