Games I’m currently playing

My video card gave out sometime last week, so I’m left without a gaming machine/workstation/best friend. Before it gave out, I was furiously working on Doom III, which I love immensely.
Yes, the monster placements may feel a bit cheap at times, but I’d rather be surprised than face a couple of minions from hell that shows up in plain sight. Since the demonic beasts don’t use complex military tactics, I reckon that placing spawn areas behind your viewpoint is the only way from making Doom III a cakewalk for veteran gamers.
Because I can’t play my murder simulators on the ancient laptop that I’m now using, I’m relegated to my old PlayStation 2. What’s a giggling pyromaniac to play in the meantime?
Here’s what: Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction.
As you probably know, Mercenaries is like GTA, but in a more feasible setting: North Korea. The game is more combat-oriented, and is also like a single-player version of Battlefield 2 because it lets you control all of the weapons and vehicles in the game. You see a helicopter in the background, you can fly it. AA guns? Use them if you can get rid of the surrounding guards.
The best part? You blow shit up. A lot of it.
Until I get my PC and upgrade it to run Bioshock, I’m stuck in virtual North Korea. Not that I’m complaining. If Mercenaries were a lesser game, I’d be upset.

I have also recently rediscovered my PS2, and I am also playing Mercenaries. Besides that, I’m playing Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow, Guitar Hero 2, and Half-Life 2 episode 1.

The original Red Faction?
If not, then shame. Shame, I say, Mike. SHAME.
Though it’s even better on PC. Plus the map editor is ungodly. :-)

Dang, man. Can’t anyone refrain from using the term “PC” until next week? I grieve, I tell ya.
I don’t have Red Faction for the PS2, but I would pick one up the minute I see a copy. I don’t see old titles in my retailer these days.
I have Project Snowblind sitting in the corner, but I don’t know if I can handle it. I’m a sissy in using controllers for FPS. I survive in Mercenaries by mowing people down and using those nifty grenade launchers that blow shit up in a large radius.

It’s okay. I felt the same way when my 360 was in for repairs. Got it back a few weeks ago, not quite in time for Bioshock, but within a few days after.
If you like grenade launchers you’ll have a blast with Red Faction. Their Geo-Mod “system” is utterly bad-ass. Enemy hiding behind a wall? Blow up the wall. Tank popped cannon rounds at you from a bridge? Blow out the bridge from underneath it.
The deathmatch gets wicked, too. Only 1v1, but eventually there’s not much of the walls left, and each arena has loads of little secret compartments with ammo, health, and brutal weapons.

It’s always a good time for Bioshock anyway. ;) Man, I really need to find a copy of Red Faction. I think a cousin has one, but I’m not sure. Time to get acquainted with relatives, hehe.
