FPS Rantings

MGS4 is an FPS

by Mike on July 26th, 2007

Hideo Kojima, the legendary designer of the Metal Gear games, once joked at the inaugural trailer of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots that the highly-anticipated stealth game is an FPS. Finally, a Policy Shift? Kojima’s 2005 Tokyo Game Show trailer stated “Not FPS, MGS!”

Little did we know.

At the game’s 20th anniversary celebration, Kojima demonstrated that you can play MGS4 in first-person view. Here’s the 15-minute proof:

Unlike the previous MGS games where you’re limited to a peek in first-person view, you can now move around in that perspective when playing Guns of the Patriots, just like a bona fide FPS would. However, like the legions of Snake fans, I wouldn’t recommend playing in FPS throughout the game. Why? Because seeing your surroundings is more important.

The exciting part about this FPS feature in MGS4 is that the game lets you make some precision shooting when called for, and you can dodge your enemies in this view like any self-respecting gamer should.

4 opinions for MGS4 is an FPS

…damn it. This video may have sold me on a PS3. Though the FPS didn’t sell me on it. ActiveCa–rather, OCTOCamo did.

I’m waiting over a year no matter what, but who knows. I might get lucky and MGS4 will come over to the 360. A few of the comments from Konami kind of hint at that possibility down the road. Fingers are crossed.

Cause I sure as hell don’t want to bite the PS3 bullet…haha

Well Alex, I’m sure you understand why I had to do the FPS angle. This is an FPS blog after all. ;)

Although yes, the camo kicked me off my chair.

I think this PS3 exclusivity is just temporary. I recall that Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance made it to the Xbox, so MGS4 for the 260 may not sound like fiction after all.

    Haha, you cheeky monkey.

What I’m also looking at is Konami’s take on the user installation base. At this point, even in Japan, where Sony has traditionally had a fairly decent footing, I read that they only recently hit the 1 mil mark for PS3s sold over there. At least I think that was what the report said.

But either way, Sony’s PS3 sales are hurting. Their installed user base is miniscule compared to Wii and 360. Their game exclusivity has dried up to MGS4 and basically nothing else. Microsoft has a bunch of killer games lined up, some exclusives, others franchises they bled out of Sony (GTA, Assassin’s Creed, Devil May Cry 4 to name a few).

Given everything–especially considering if Konami is genuinely concerned they might not be able to recup the game development costs–I guess it’d be an act of God that stops MGS4 from getting ported over.

Agreed on the PS3’s market. And mind you, it’s not like everyone who bought a PS3 would buy MGS4.

I presume the game’s fantastic as sliced bread (it’s not out yet, after all), but naturally, a PS3 owner doesn’t automatically translate into an MGS4 owner, which is prolly why the game is hitting the 360.

    I like cheeky.
