Call of Duty 4 is lighting it up

by Mike on June 21st, 2007

What makes our shooters look great? More textures and polygons? Yes and yes. But the feature that sets them apart from other smaller details that you may overlook is lighting. Don’t believe me? Boot up F.E.A.R. and try playing the game with low lighting details. You’ll see graphics that scream 1998. Well not exactly 1998 since the textures and models are way more superior, but you get the idea.

Infinity Ward has the same idea for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and they share their thoughts in this trailer:

It’s nice to see that the series has abandoned its World War II setting, and is moving towards a more current backdrop. Like any Call of Duty game, we’re expecting to see huge battlefields and many scripted events (e.g. the spiraling helicopter that crashed to the ground).

According to art director Richard Kriegler, Infinity Ward will be using bump maps made from normal maps that’ll make the textures and lighting look über-real. As with any upcoming shooter, I have a concern: Call of Duty 4 may look spectacular, but the power the game will require is sure to punish many of today’s PCs, mine included.

So folks, if you can’t afford a burly PC to run all of this eye candy, get an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 (hey, an 80GB PS3 is actually cheaper than a cutting-edge PC) and play the game with a controller. Either way, you’re screwed.

2 opinions for Call of Duty 4 is lighting it up

I read an article about Call of Duty 4 in this month’s Game Informer and it looks to be a great title. I agree that moving away from WWII is a good move, making the game a little more marketable to those that have overplayed the WWII genre.

It’s good to see Infinity Ward back working on the game too. I hear that COD 2, made by Infinity Ward, was a great title and clearly better than COD3. (I’m actually in the process of picking up a copy of COD2 myself, as a warm-up to COD4. )

As for getting a console to play the game, I’m a little biased, having experienced the joys of spending $500 to get an Xbox 360 rather than $2200 to buy a new gaming rig.

Either way, this game is gonna be awsome!

I hear you on the price disparity between the PC and consoles. I’m just a bit disagreeable on the control scheme. The analog stick is no match for the mouse when it comes to aiming, and auto-aiming feels like a sellout.
