Fields Ops Video Preview
Hexux TV has a narrative video of their first hands on experience with Field Ops. The game that’s combining RTS and FPS gameplay styles. For those of you interested in how this game is turning out I suggest you go and watch. There’s a nice little british gamer guy in the corner explaining everything and going over how they felt when they played. He gives high props to how seamless the game switches between FTS and FPS modes. They did prefer the FPS mode for the actual fighting but the RTS view gave them a great way to plan their attacks through the narrow winding streets.
One issue I’m slightly confused on is how they gave orders to their teammates. I get the feeling that they had to go into RTS view to do this and so that brings up other thoughts of do I always have to go into RTS view and tell them to follow me and then go here and there and whatnot. Meaning I’m concerned about micromanagement. I can’t stand it when my AI teammates are about as smart as a stapler and I’m constantly telling them to do this or that. Seeing the video and watching as one of his teammates was standing there and got shot in the face and didn’t really respond was rather disheartening. Hopefully that’ll improve before the game’s release.
Another point he brings up is that the game won’t be the most graphically amazing or have ragdoll physics any of the kind of goodies we’re taking for granted lately. It’ll be a rather simplistic looking game but the gameplay itself should be the real winner.
