FPS Rantings

Looking back

by Matt on February 2nd, 2007

Voodoo Extreme has a recent article on the top 20 games released for the “last gen” era for Windows. Among this list are several of our bread and butter “shoot em in the face” classics.

Coming in at 19 is our frat boy favorite Halo. At first I was rather surprised that this came in so low, but then I remembered that the sensation of Halo was for the console. The PC port, while admirable, just wasn’t all that great. It didn’t have the same feel that the one on the Xbox had. Needless to say, glad to see it make the list.

Game 17 runs in with Unreal Tournament 2004. Probably one of the biggest online FPS games. With new modes like assault and onslaught. And of course all the vehicles this was multiplayer mayhem at it’s finest.

Jumping in a step ahead at 16 is Medal of Honor: Allied Assault one of the supposedly better WWII shooters. I never played it so I can’t say yay or nay.

Skipping ahead to spot #9 is our favorite zombies in every closet and behind every door Doom 3. Don’t forget the whole “I can’t see anything, use the flashlight. There’s a zombie. Switch to the gun. Where’d the zombie go? INYURFACE DED!” Good times.

A step ahead, taking the 8th spot is F.E.A.R., a personal favorite of mine. Not only did the game look great but it had a strong creepy storyline and some of the most intense combat I’ve ever played. Almost every fight made you work for it and you were deeply satisfied after having kicked some ass.

Another game I never really got into at spot number 6 is Battlefield 1942. As the article mentions this was the gateway game for the WWII genre.

Speaking of the WWII genre #4 happens to be Call of Duty. Which is now in its’ 3rd segment, but they haven’t really gone anywhere. A strong singleplayer and multiplayer made for a well rounded and great game experience helping it earn it’s #4 spot.

Lastly, though it was almost first, we have Half Life 2. A very much long and highly awaited sequel to the original Half Life. You got a brand new, purdy engine to continue the weird and twisted experience of Gordon Freeman as he wanders around trying to figure just wtf is going on and why this guy in a suit seems to have a thing for you.

That ends the list for us shooter folks. Nabbing 8 spots out of 20 is almost half and considering the wide array of genres I’m fairly impressed.
