The Crossing
Who said innovation was dead? This game looks to break down a barrier or two and bring about something new as a result. 1up has a rather long interview with the guys developing the game. And while it’s not entirely clear all the way through the general idea I get is that they’re combining single player and multiplayer. Basically you’d get your players going through the single player campaign, people going through the story mode. And then you’ve got your players who are just out there for some online gaming, folks looking for some multiplayer action.
What, I think, these guys are doing with the game is taking these two types of people and putting them together. So instead of having AI opponents stopping you from taking an objective or completing a mission you’re going to have real people on the other end. At first you think, well that’s gonna be slightly unfair. Half a dozen “real” players are going to kick your ass, especially if they’re good, and you’ll never advance the storyline. Well their fix for this is that the single player campaign has you going through as “elites”. Extra armor, better weapons, you’re just that much cooler. And then your opposition is going to be normal guys populated with the online community.
It all sounds very ambitious and grand and if it comes together it could really change the way people game. The real concern, however, is can it be too ambitious? Too grand? Are they trying too much and if it doesn’t work then what? You have a broken single player with no real opposition? Multiplayer then becomes just your run of the mill death match and capture the flag. Much could go wrong if they mess it up and The Crossing would be a huge flop, but on the flip side if they do it well it could change the way we play single and multiplayer games.
Such is the way of projects so big and destined to shift the way we do things. Keep an eye on this one folks. It’ll be interesting to see where it goes.
