Hellgate: London Subscription MMO?
Those bastards. According to Shacknews there was an announcement stating that the multiplayer portion of Hellgate London is going to run like a subscription based MMO.
In addition to yesterday’s announcement that Hellgate: London will be shipping in Summer 2007, developer Flagship Studios revealed this week that the game’s multiplayer component is a subscription-based online service. Speaking to Shacknews at CES in Las Vegas, CEO Bill Roper noted that the game draws significantly from massively multiplayer games, with genre trappings such as guilds, continually developed content, a full social system, and raid-type gameplay.
What the hell?! Extremely stupid move on their part. From what I’ve seen of this game there’s not enough to warrant people wanting to pay money to play with their friends. Game has a dedicated single player mode and that’ll be good for most. We all remember Diablo II. Sure you could join battle.net online and play through the quests with your friends, but you didn’t have to pay for that. I for sure as hell wouldn’t have paid for that back then and I won’t pay for that now.
Before I work myself up into a frenzy I’m gonna sit back and wait for all the details to come out. This is just my initial knee-jerk reaction and there’s almost always something that comes out to change the picture. But as it currently stands? I’ll be playing this game alone.
