CPL’s Severity

by Matt on December 19th, 2006

Some of you may know about the professional gaming organizations where gamers can compete in teams or 1 on 1 to earn cash prizes and what not. They’ve even gone so far to broadcast them on TV on occasion. One of the more prominent groups, the Cyberathlete Professional League(CPL) has announced that they are making their own multiplayer game called “Severity”. They’ve got a press release on their site but it’s in PDF form so if you click the link adobe will thank you.

“Severity is a multiplayer first person shooter (FPS) focusing on team-versus-team and one-versus-one play modes. Additionally, the game offers unprecedented support for gamers worldwide playing in online and live competitions both casually and professionally.”

So a game designed and developed by people who run a gaming league. Interesting. Obviously there’s gonna be no single player to the game since it’s all for competition. One thing you can (atleast I would expect) count on is that the in-game lobby should be chalk full of options and easy to use features. It’d be rather silly if they didn’t.

Severity is gonna be made using one of id’s engines. More than likely the Doom 3 one so the game won’t be completely fugly. Wonder if they had to license it or if the boys at id were kind enough to donate it.

And of those of you who don’t know wtf CPL is, here’s a quick excerpt:

The Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) is the world’s first electronic sports league and a major force behind the transformation of videogame competitions to a professional sport. Since its founding in 1997, the Dallas-based organization has hosted 60 international main events with a total attendance of 300,000 gamers, has sanctioned over 500 international qualifiers and awarded over $3 million in prizes.
