Promoting Windows Games and Communities
Firing Squad had an interesting post today. They attended Microsoft’s Gamefest (a developer’s conference) and got some insight on how Microsoft plans to encourage PC gaming and game communities. I’m actually rather glad this is being addressed. PC gaming seems to be taking a few hits lately with big consoles being pushed out and more and more games being developed for the 360 and PS3 exclusively. While I’m positive PC gaming will never die, I do think it’s taken a bit of a backseat to consoles nowadays. Reading this article you can see that Microsoft has some plans to put PC gaming back on the frontlines. Most of the article revolves around Windows Vista and the capabilities that they’re planning to use with it. DirectX 10, better bug support, and easier game installs. If you’re an avid PC gamer, I highly recommend the read to get a glimpse of where they’re trying to take things. You really get an idea of just how hardcore Vista is going to be when you see comments like:
This is because Vista will only support DVD-Rom drives; there will be no native CD-Rom support for the new OS.
I don’t know about you, but that’s speaks of some serious focus to people who already know what they’re doing. Vista isn’t looking to be just a Windows upgrade, but a full fledged platform for PC gaming. While I’m sure it’ll be all warm and soft and user friendly feeling, I do hope they realize that a lot of their audience will know enough about PCs that they can leave out some of those “user friendly” features that tend to get in the way or piss people off.
Anyways, here’s to PC gaming and hoping Vista will be the spark it needs to get back up on it’s feet.
