“Xbox” Murders

by Matt on July 26th, 2006

Normally, I try to keep the posts to FPS stuff, because afterall, that’s what you’re here for. Today, however, I happened to come across this article on Yahoo news and it got me kinda angry or rather annoyed. I saw the headline and thought that it was gonna be that they committed a crime similar to what you could do in a game. Or perhaps they based their crime off a game. No. That’s not it at all. Apparently someone got kicked out of a home and the person who kicked him out kept some of his stuff, including an Xbox. The guy and two of his friends returned, killed everyone and took their stuff back, which included the Xbox. While I’m kinda filling in the blanks, that’s the overall gist I get from the article. This had nothing to do with video games.

It bothers me that Yahoo or whomever else is trying to tote this as a video game slaying when the only relation to a video game is that there happened to be an Xbox in the list of stuff the guy was trying to get back. As I read more from other sources I get the idea that the primary reason for them going in was getting the Xbox back, but that’s no different from any other electronic device. It could have been a stereo. But no, because it was an Xbox, everyone’s trying to tie in the murders to video games and point the blame to games causing people to do violent and awful things. This is the kinda press that people believe and hold in their hearts when they vote on bills and judge on what they think they know about video games.

Much to my relief in all of this is that the trial doesn’t seem to be focusing on the Xbox/video game portion of what happened. So I’m fairly glad that they’re realizing that it was just a crime and video games were not the culprit. I’m just frustrated with Yahoo’s spin on the story making it out to be something it’s not. Which is what the press is generally good at, but still. I have my right to be annoyed.

I second you in being annoyed. I came across the headlines and was wondering what they meant by xbox murders. That’s such a stupid way to call it. I bet they use it as a way to trick people into reading the article. Lame.

[…] During my perusings. I came across this article on Forbes. It’s a follow up to the “Xbox” Murders story that I posted about a few days ago. Basically the sentencing was life for one of the guys and death penalty recommendations for the other two. Here’s a blurb of how it all went down. Prosecutors said Victorino was angry with victim Erin Belanger, 22, who had him evicted when she found him living in her grandmother’s home in Deltona. She kept some of his belongings, including some clothing and the video game system […]
