Half Life 2: Episode 1 Commentary

by Matt on July 10th, 2006

So this weekend I played through Half Life 2 Episode 1 again but this time with the commentary enabled. It was really a different experience. While I didn’t focus so much on playing as looking for the little commentary nodes. You see, as you play through the game you’ll come across the nodes and when you use one it’ll play a track from one of the developers and they’ll talk about the scene.

It was really cool. I had forgotten about this feature from before and it made me feel better about having spent $20 on the episode. Especially when I saw that one of the developers has my same name! I enjoyed listening to how they did certain scenes or how they changed things because of playtesting. It gives some good insight into the kind of work they do to actually get us a polished game.

One of my favorite things was the re-telling of how they kept changing Alyx around. She originally was supposed to drop a lot of hints and urge you to keep moving if you dawdled too long. They found that players began to hate her and for good reason too. There have been other games that have done the same thing with their characters and they’ve gotten to be really annoying. Alyx becomes more of a companion and teammate instead of a nuisance.

Plus, I don’t know if the HDR wasn’t enabled last time I played, but I noticed it this time around and it’s really pretty. I played through the Lost Coast as well (need to do the commentary for that one) and I was thoroughly impressed with the lighting changes. I wasn’t sure what to expect the first time around and I was looking for some huge drastic changes and I wasn’t seeing them. Then I got into the chapel room and noticed what they were doing. While the differences aren’t jaw dropping it’s a very healthy boost to the engine and game experience when the HDR is going.

So needless to say, the commentary was definitely worth the listen and made me appreciate the game a whole lot more.
