Prey Demo Reviewed

I do believe this game needs to have dramamine shipped along with the box. The potential for throwing up is fairly high, especially when the action gets fast paced and you’re going from one orientation to another. They do start you off rather easy, only one room shifting thing at a time. But eventually they ramp it up and you’re going from shift to shift to shift. Extremely disorienting.

The game visually, however, is gorgeous. You can definitely tell Prey was made using the Doom 3 engine (or a variant on it) but that plastic rubber feel and those sickly wet organic textures are all there.

Tommy, the main character, is voiced rather well and his one-liners and quick quips to the situation help get rid of that silent hero syndrome so many games seem to have nowadays. It’s kinda of refreshing and amusing. The basic premise, if you didn’t know, is you get hijacked by aliens, they get you, your girl, and your grandpa. Plus lots of other people, but from what I saw I don’t think they play a major role, and you’re free to emotionally distance yourself from them.Sucks to be him

The weapons you get to play with are alien based since the only “weapon” you bring is a pipewrench. You have your standard assault rifle with neat eye-ball attaching zoom feature. “Grenades” in the form of 3-legged spider crabs. Some big Fire/Ice gun. It can only be used as one type at a time. You suck the ice or fire energy from certain spots and you’re stuck with that particular form until you leech from another spot. And then lastly (Demo wise) you have your spirit bow. It shoots, guess what..arrows. These however are limited in supply and you have to get the energy from fallen enemies to replenish your magical shafts of deadly light.

Gameplay itself is typical of a shooter. Until you get to the walkways or portals. Then it just gets nauseating. But in a good way. You’ll be running along a grav walkway thing and some guy will be below you, relatively speaking, and you’ll kill him and he’ll fall up. It really messes with your inner ear. It’s an amazing and innovative twist to things and I think it’ll work out well. Multiplayer will probably be for the strong of stomach only, but it’ll be fierce and fun.

The demo was worth the try and I think the full game will also be worth the purchase. It will most assuredly be one of those games to kick it up a notch.
