Professional Gaming on TV

by Matt on April 17th, 2006

Well our time has come. Apparently,

Major League Gaming, the world’s largest organized video gaming league, on Monday will announce a programming deal in which USA Network will air seven one-hour episodes in the fall, featuring the pro circuit and its players.

I always get a bit nervous when I hear things like this. I mean, there’s the Spike TV game awards, and those are just stupid. I’m ashamed to be a gamer when I see the commercials for that air. There are things on G4 and they make me slightly ill to watch. So, I’m always interested to see how a new network will put their spin on it. Will they make it all bling bling and flashing lights or will they treat it all hip and trendy or considering they refer to it like Poker and NASCAR, will they treat it more like a sport.

Now, to be fair Spike TV is having a game show award so there is a bit of flash and bling, I guess, that can go along with those, but it’s so overhyped by the most wrong people for the event that you just feel dumber for ever having played a game.

I am willing to watch these episodes and see how they handle it, and I really hope they do it well. Or atleast more true to what gaming is really like rather than hyping it up and making it seem to be really hip and trendy and cool. Gaming IS cool (by my standards) but it’s not at all like the hype Spike TV tries to give it.
