Ubersoldier Demo Reviewed
So I just finished the Ubersoldier demo. Game looks very nice. The graphics are cool. The effects are well done. Especially the shield you get.
You can fire this bad boy up and it stops all incoming bullets, as well as out going, but the coolest effect is when you shoot the shield, it will hold the bullets in place until you turn it off. At which point the red hot bullets fall to the ground and cool off. That was really neat. I liked that. As in Dune, however, the slow blade penetrates. Meaning people can run through and melee attack you. Aside from that though, the game graphically looks very nice and runs well without any hitches or slowdowns.
The bad side? The game feels really unpolished. This is a demo, but certain menu items didn’t have a title and it just felt…lacking. The voice acting wasn’t too grand either. I wasn’t sure if I was shooting Nazi’s or not. They all sounded “American”; everyone did. My comrades would tell me something and I wasn’t sure if it was bad or good. Or what the hell was going on. I just ran around shooting the people who shot at me. Which..I seem to do fairly well. Needless to say, the blood on the screen when you get hit is extremely distracting and seriously gets in the way. The game does reward you for headshots though. If you manage to get 3 in quick succession your aforementioned shield has it’s power replenished. The game also mentions something about melee attacks which I did not get around to. One of the more comical features of the game is what I call the Pinata effect. It would seem that all Nazi’s explode into a vast array of goodies like health and ammo once shot and killed.
All in all? A fairly mediocre shooter from my first look at the demo. The action seems to be good with the storyline/acting bringing up the far rear. Now obviously this may all change once the full game is released, but the demo is supposed to give you a feel for what the game will be. My thoughts? The gameplay seems really solid. It feels good and looks to be really action packed, the Burut team did a great job there. Storyline wise? Ehh… It doesn’t seem like it’ll offer a lot in that department. $20-$30 dollar shooter at best. I certainly wouldn’t want to pay $50 bucks for it.
